Urban Peep Show, Solo exhibition at Baustelle Schaustelle Essen, 2017
In my work Urban Peep Show I deal with the construction site as a visual phenomenon in urban space. The gaze and seeing, the visible and the invisible play a major role. Based on photographic material, I develop a visual vocabulary of the construction site. Fences, scaffolding, tarpaulins, fabrics, nets and plywood boxes act as regulators of perception. They attract the eye, but at the same time deny a direct insight. They feed the fascination for the hidden and speculative. Construction sites define places in transition. They do not yet possess a past and a future that, though planned, is nevertheless uncertain. I am interested in these hybrid conditions and the interruptions they cause in the otherwise orderly urban fabric.
